- Bingo is a term used in Scrabble for a play in which a player puts seven tiles on the board in a single turn. Mattel, the game's manufacturer outside North America, uses the term bonus to describe such a word. In French, it is called a scrabble.A player who does this receives 50 points in addition to what the word would normally score. Bingos are an important part of achieving high scores in.

Jeff | posted 11-10-2009 10:52 AM ET (US) Last night I was watching heavy metal task force on my DVR and caught a segment on the V22 Osprey. The pilots where flying a long training mission that required in air refueling. There was a problem though as the refueling tanker was not yet in up in the air and this was causing the pilots concern as they where reaching the BINGO mark. If they hit BINGO they were aborting the mission and returning to base. Turns out that hitting BINGO means you are the point where if you continue on you will not have enough fuel to return to home or, reach 'safe harbor' and you must alter course to find fuel or face running out of fuel while in route. I use wondering if this is a term found in the Marine would as I have never heard it used. Also, does anyone know if BINGO in an anagram for something? None the less I like the term and will certainly use it on water. |
JMARTIN | posted 11-10-2009 11:28 AM ET (US) I thought Bingo was a dog. 'B I N G O, B I N G O, B I N G O and Bingo was his name.' John |
Buckda | posted 11-10-2009 11:30 AM ET (US) Well, the military abbreviation for the word is BNGO - I'm guessing it stands for something along the lines of 'Beyond this point, no goal' or '...no gas'. Both carry the same meaning that you will not reach your goal if you travel beyond 'BNGO' without fuel or an alternate destination. Nonetheless, since that is pure speculation, I've asked a colleague who has a fiancee who is a pilot for the Marine Corps to him if he knows. He has enough intellectual curiosity to either already know the history, or ask his instructors... |
R T M | posted 11-10-2009 11:49 AM ET (US) Bingo is a game not a term. Here is some history on the game of Bingo. http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/blbingo.htm I think the term 'Bingo' as used in your TV program is probably a TV term used in the script by the the actors. I asked my daughter about this, she was a crew chief, and flew on KC10 Tankers in the Air Force for a few years. She said that the tankers were always in direct communication with the aircraft to be refueled, and were always early to a refueling rondevu, and never let their aircraft down. I have heard the term 'bingo' used in normal speech though. It means something has happened as you predicted, and you would proclaim 'Bingo' How this term would fit in with the halfway point on a boating trip when you were half out of fuel, is a mystery to me. It is kind of a fun word to say though, so say it often 'BINGO' It would make a good boat name too, or even a good nickname, I like it better than Binkie. LOL (kind of a slow day around here) rich/Binkie |
Jeff | posted 11-10-2009 12:03 PM ET (US) Rich, The show is not scripted drama or adventure show. It is a show on the Science Channel that documents how specific equipment accomplishes it's missions. The segments are real life documentations of the equipment in action in the real world. |
Jeff | posted 11-10-2009 12:11 PM ET (US) I should mention there was some scripting in the operation and not the plot of the segment. Since the pilots where flying a 'training mission' the operations commanders where creating situations that made the pilots think, adapt and over come the problems that where thrown at them. One of them happened to be the tankers left the base late do to lightening and winds from passing thunder storms. |
BlueMax | posted 11-10-2009 03:20 PM ET (US) Actually I thought 'Bingo' was when you were right on the mark. Which also makes sense that you are right on the mark of decision making - do you RTB (Return To Base) safely or not (possibly aborting the mission to save the craft and crew from imminent loss). 'Bingo' fuel conditions would therefore adjust to flying conditions taking in the burn rate of fuel required to safely RTB under said conditions (weight, weather, distance, payload carried effecting aerodynamics, etc). 'Bingo' is the common pilot terminology for point of no return on fuel - you can either RTB safely or not - may also be a point for making alternate (likely less savory) landing plans while still executing the immediate mission. Also, shouting 'BINGO' ends the game. Which also makes sense - you just ran out of fuel to complete the mission - game over? Bingo. |
AZdave | posted 11-10-2009 03:31 PM ET (US) In one of his many books Tom Clancy uses the term in reference to an aircraft low on fuel-- and he's right about almost everything. |
lwallis | posted 11-10-2009 03:58 PM ET (US) Bingo is a term used in naval aviation on almost every mission from the aircraft carrier unless your conducting blue water operations (no suitable landing field within range). It's normally the amount of fuel necessary to reach a suitable landing site plus 30 minutes, but this also depends on the aircraft in question. Reasons to bingo are numerous, the pilot can't get aboard at night, theree's a fouled deck meaning something is wrong in the landing area to prevent a safe landing, landing gear malfunctions or other types of emergencies where you'd rather the aircraft not come aboard the ship unless there's no choice, bad weather and many others. It can also meant the fuel necessary to return from a mission to the ship plus a fuel reserve. |
contender | posted 11-10-2009 10:24 PM ET (US) Sounds like a word of many meanings, just like another 4 letter word I have heard before... |
BlueMax | posted 11-10-2009 10:42 PM ET (US) Contender - I bet like 'BINGO' that other four letter word also means 'Well shoot, I just noticed that I may not have enough fuel left to make it back if I stick around here any longer.' ^@^ |
Plotman | posted 11-10-2009 11:01 PM ET (US) Bingo - Minimum fuel for a comfortable and safe return to base. Aircraft can fly and fight past bingo fuel in combat situations, but at considerable peril. |
PeteB88 | posted 11-11-2009 12:57 AM ET (US) JMARTIN, you missed an O. B I N G O and BINGO was his NAME-O. I'm sure you feel better now. Catch you later-O |
PeteB88 | posted 11-11-2009 01:00 AM ET (US) When I used to 'fly' the F18 Flight Sim game on 'combat' missions if you flew too far or too much on afterburner you'd get into a low fuel situation and the female voice would come on 'Bingo' Bingo, Bingo and I think a warning light would come on on the instrument panel that flashed 'BINGO' enough bingo for a long time. Jeff - maybe we need to design a Bingo meter. |
BlueMax | posted 11-11-2009 01:11 AM ET (US) Tailhook - now there's an organization with a reputation for staying abreast of things.... :-O! |
BlueMax | posted 11-11-2009 01:21 AM ET (US) I think we should play that game - when a thread such as this reaches that tipping point of total derailment.... who will be the first to shout BINGO! Oh, hell that would be after almost every initial post then.... hmmm key word BINGO for the day/week/month? Boston Whaler free space and words such as Troll, Chine, Smirk(less),PNW, Lanier, Liberal, Wing Nut, Binkie etc get posted and you set your own card out of the week's choices (always more choices than spots). Winner posts BINGO and sends copy of completed card to jimh..... and then buys first round at next rendezvous. |
BlueMax | posted 11-11-2009 01:30 AM ET (US) Maybe I should change my name to Sir SPAM Alot... I meant to put Binkie's name as a lil ole shout-out to the guy - and it comes out after Liberal and Wing Nut - sorry Bink's sometimes it is what it is I guess. Ha. Hope all is well back home in Havana - you ought to be able to swim across without the CG escort soon ;-) |
